What is wisdom? It's not something a lot of modern people have successfully answered. In this episode, we make an attempt, and consider how embracing this idea of wisdom can lead us toward more compassion, love, and caring.
This episodes’ Action Points:
Examine a Strongly Held Belief– This is notoriously difficult, as our minds have built-in tendencies to ignore evidence that doesn’t support a pre-existing belief. But the ability to be critical of our own ideas and beliefs is a cornerstone of mindfulness.
Cultivate Compassion– Compassion is one of the building-blocks of wisdom. The old saying to “put yourself in another person’s shoes” is applicable here, and the more we do it, the more we develop this component of the human mind.
Develop Curiosity– Our minds can tend to leap to judgment, and when they do, curiosity is extinguished. Yet curiosity is the beginning of exploration and adventure, and leads us ever-deeper into wisdom. To do it, simply say “I wonder . . .” when confronting a situation, rather than “I know” or “I think”.
Pursue Non-Attachment– Non-attachment is simply the ability to see our thoughts as clouds moving through our consciousness, without equating ourselves with those clouds. We are the consciousness, not the clouds. This ability arises naturally out of a meditation practice. If you want to get started with meditating, here are two videos that can launch you on your way!
