Unleash Your Life, Episode 27, Do Service Like a Jedi

We've been told that the key to happiness is amassing tons of things for ourselves, yet science shows just the opposite -- that joy comes from being in service to others. Here's how to add more joy to your life by doing good!

Here are this episode’s Action Points:

Choose a moment of service — Next time you’re going to get a Starbuck’s, make a conscious decision to put that time/energy/money toward something else that is of service to others. Afterwards, notice how you feel!

Try a day of living in the Attitude of Giving — Wake up in the morning and say, “this is a giving day”. Try to live all day in service to others, bringing as much light and joy into others’ lives as you can.

Accept from others — Giving feels great, but to allow others that feeling of giving, we have to be open to receiving. For some of us, it’s easier to give than receive. Do your best to receive with graciousness! =)

  1. You guys are always such an inspiration.
    Somewhere along the line, our society has changed from one of giving/helping others, to a me first attitude (and screw everyone else that gets in my way). I find that even just giving a smile to someone I’m walking past seems to make me feel better, especially if it makes them smile.
    We need to return to treating each other with respect and dignity.

    1. YES! Rob, this is so beautifully said. And you’ve called us to remember that our simplest actions can have an impact. I love it!!
      Kenton =)

    2. Well said! And Kenton mentioned offering to help not just demanding to take over when someone appears to be struggling.
      Who can refuse a smile? Even if they don’t give back a big smile?

  2. Giving is good. I think I’ve mentioned that we’ve been cleaning our local church building for a while. Several years ago when we started it was a totally volunteer thing. It needed done. We could do it. I was surprised how much I enjoyed doing it. After a couple years at a point when income was tighter than normal for us someone got the idea we should be getting paid. The idea of a little extra money seemed good but almost from the first check the joy was less. Now it was a job. We had to spend just so many seconds per toilet every week. It had to be done. No more skipping an occasional week if we got busy. And somehow we found less time to occasionally hand scrub the hardwood floor under the pews when we weren’t busy. The hardwood didn’t get that much time on the weekly list! A lot of people don’t seem to understand the shift in perspective.
    Gifts are fun to give too!
    Thanks for giving of your time making these podcasts and your videos!

    1. Maude, what an interesting observation! Indeed, when something becomes “expected”, as often is the case when money gets involved, it can really change the dynamic, can’t it? Thanks for sharing this!!

      Love to you!
      Kenton and Rebecca =)
