Unleash Your Life Episode 15, Saving the Trees

Think your voice doesn't count? Listen to the story of how two children turned aside an "inevitable" destruction of hundreds of trees. If they can make a difference, you can too!

If you want to read the book we reference in this podcast, you can find High Noon in Skivvies by Jeff Alan here!

Here are this episode’s Action Points:

Learn to Distinguish What You Can and Can’t Change — Often, we have more power to change a situation than we’ve been taught. Think you can’t change it? Take some time to really consider if there are out-of-the-box ways that the problem could be solved. This reconditions our mind to become more creative and empowered.

Get Involved — It’s not just about voting. It’s about getting to know local officials, going to meetings, even running for office. And it doesn’t have to be politics, either. If there is something you believe in, can you join a group (or create one) that is working for good? Start a movement like #trashtag.

Make a Change — Pick one thing in your life you want to change, issue you want to confront, challenge you want to take on, etc. Now pretend a friend has come to you with this issue, and get creative! Even wacky! Really put forth some crazy ideas, and then look for “seeds” in those ideas. You’re tapping into major creativity here, and will find some solutions that you might not have thought of if you were thinking more “realistically”.

  1. Hello little family. I love everything about this episode! Thank you for speaking for the trees and for the people too. I just got back from 4 intense days in DC working with 26 youth-adult partners who are all working on equity issues. Oh wow, was I ever impressed. Youth all over the U.S. are tackling big equity issues. They decided to make what some folks said was impossible – possible. If we don’t just take “no” for an answer we can plant seeds and if we do not reap the harvest, our children will!

    1. Luisa!!! What an amazing experience that must have been! It’s so encouraging to see youth being empowered in such powerful ways. Good changes ahead! We’ve been following Andrew Yang, one of the democratic presidential candidates, and were happy to hear he was proposing lowering the voting age to 16. There are so many youth who want to be engaged, and it’s about time we begin honoring them. Thanks for all you do in that direction! We love and miss you all — we’ll be down in May, and hope we get to see you and Mike then!

      Love,
      KaRaMaL =)

  2. I’m glad you were able to save the tree. It sickens me to see construction projects begin by stripping the land of every tree and shrub and send them through the wood chipper. Then to add more injury to the land, they remove the layer of topsoil, making the land barren.

    1. Indeed! I think you can understand our love affair with trees, as I’m sure you share it! I’d love to see more respect for these marvelous beings! Love to you!!! KaRaMaL =)

  3. Another great podcast!
    I’ve occasionally surprised myself by doing things I didn’t think I could when I’ve decided that I had to do it and gone against my “you can’t do that” conditioning. I’ve also been one of the gorillas that had never been sprayed but wouldn’t even try to get the bananas.
    I’m so glad I found your YouTube channels. The lead in “I believe in you” on the Kenton Whitman channel was something I needed to hear.
    I think I’ll go hug some of our maple trees. And also the one that I’ve called cherry for years that turns out to be a black birch (cherry birch, haha).

    1. Maude, we DO believe in you! And we treasure that you’re on this adventure with us, always sharing your thoughts and feelings.

      Love from us all!
      KaRaMaL =)

  4. Kudos to Mirabelle and Liliana and to you for honoring the trees and taking action! A great podcast with an inspiring and important message for us all ~ thank you!

    1. We were so grateful that all turned out the way it did, Susan. We will pass your kind words on to Mirabelle and Liliana!

      Love,
      Kenton and Rebecca =)

  5. What an inspiring story! And what a fantastic surprise that the trees were saved at the last minute. Just a reminder not to give up. I’m ashamed to say I’d forgotten the gorilla story in Jeff’s book (a lot of takeaways from that book but mostly I picture my little brother climbing trees stringing power lines to his farm by himself and chasing away the pigs!). I’ll now shamelessly put in my plug for “High Noon in Skivvies”: https://www.amazon.com/High-Noon-Skivvies-Adventurers-Homesteading-ebook/dp/B00N1AW35Q
    Thanks for another great podcast!

    1. I appreciate that plug!! What a great book. Those visions of him stringing the electric lines . . .yikes! He’s a brave man =)

    1. Charles, we hope your girls love it! Thanks so much for your words, and for your choice to support our work! We are so grateful!!!
