Secret Turkey Video

Hello Friend!
Here it is! That special moment when I finally caught a turkey. Well, perhaps I shouldn’t say “moment” since I lay there waiting for a LONG time. But oh, when that moment came!
It’s tough to explain a moment like this, when you’ve been striving for something that you really, really want. And then it happens. Maybe not in the way you wanted, but yet, the essence of the moment is still there.
And then, like all moments, it’s gone, leaving you only with a memory, an imprint of the moment in your mind. Except in this case, the memory became a video, then a book, and now, thanks to you, it’s a memory that I can share across the world.
Thanks for being part of my journey, my friend. I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
With love,
Kenton =)

  1. Really cool to able to see the actual video. I really enjoyed reading the book, thanks you for sharing your Inspiring, entertaining and wacky story! (and everything else you share on youtube and elsewhere)

    1. Ha! Thanks, Daniel! I’m so grateful that my father decided (unbeknownst to me) to film it! And I really appreciate your words — you brightened our day over here!! =)

  2. Hi Kenton! I bought and read your entire book! what a beautiful determination, a project of a lifetime! So many beautiful lessons of life in your story. An almost extreme training, but in the end, hiding under a tarp while waiting for your turkey, it was the best ultimate solution! But I am sure that all your efforts have and will serve in your teachings. Once again thank you!

    1. My friend, thank you for your kind words! It was quite an adventure, that’s for sure. I’m so glad you could share it with me! Love to you! =)

  3. I got the book and read it cover to cover! Then I chased the secret-turkey-video turkey a bit to get it to play. (I’m a 66 year old “dinosaur” that is marginally computer literate. “They didn’t have computers when you were in school?” No, they did not have computers in every classroom when I went to school!)
    Enough of that! I loved the book!
    I woke up this morning thinking dreams are a lot like turkeys. Sometimes the big dream is made up of a bunch of smaller segments like a bunch of individual birds and sometimes you have to grab the one closest to you by whatever method you can!
    Thank you!
    A BIG THANK YOU to you and Rebecca!

    1. So glad you liked it! AND managed to see the secret video! Thanks, too, my friend, for that wonderful thought about dreams being like turkeys. I love it!!! =)

  4. Just finished the book! What a great story of inspiration, introspection and laughter! Hahaha….So awesome your dad memorialized your turkey catch! And what a great photo! Thank you for all you and your family do! Blessings!🙏❤

    1. Thank you Gabriela! I was SO glad my dad filmed that — what a surprise it was! Big love to you from our whole family!! =)

  5. Hey Kenton just finished the book and really enjoyed it. What an awesome adventure. I just wanted to thank you for all the videos you make and to let you know that you have inspired me to get outside and have some adventures myself. Much love to you and your family.

    1. Jeremy, thank you for sharing! The biggest gift you can give us is letting us know we’ve inspired you to get outside more! Woohooo! Our whole family is sending you love and Happy Adventuring!!! =)

  6. Hi Kenton,

    ha, a great move! And no running involved, as one might have guessed from the first two chapters.

    I have just received the book, so I haven’t had a chance to read the rest, but I will.

    Thanks for the turkey-speed delivery. I really didn’t expect it to take so short from Wisconsin to my place.

    A more detailed reaction might follow later. This is just to say thanks and hello.

    Blessings from

    Stephan

  7. I’m reading this final part of the book now and couldn’t wait until the end to watch the video. This was so fortunate that your dad was able to capture the moment. But I have to say, I would probably have been with the ladies at the time: “Dad readied his video camera, and Rebecca, Stephanie, and Maxine, being sensible in the way that women often are, applied themselves to building a puzzle.” Ha! I love it! (And because I listen to your podcasts, I could truly hear your voices in all of your conversations in the book. You and Rebecca are a great team!) I’m already planning who I’ll share the book with first when I’m finished. It’s a page-turner!

  8. Thanks. Thank you for your whole story!
    Your honesty was very disarming to me. Since you, “Mr. Survival”, told the true details of some of the most unbelievable and unimaginable actions that a husband can subject his “AMAZING” wife to, it’s made me realize that maybe some of the unbelievable, and unimaginable, ideas that I have presented to my wife are not so outlandish after all. (I’m glad Rebecca brought the sleeping bag with!)
    I’m also glad that you listened and accepted her influence to bring matches with you “Into The Cold” and “Touching The Ghost Bird”. I loved the imagery of the little hollow: “I was alone in this winter world, and it felt strangely peaceful. … I felt a hint of what we humans really are. Not strangers to nature, but an integral part …, as much … as the blowing wind.” That really spoke to me and set my soul at peace. Thanks. I love winter! I was born in Wisconsin and I grew up in Minnesota along the St Croix River.

    The book was exciting and easy to read.
    I read the “Capture!” chapter before watching the video. I read that section to my wife and then we watched the video together. It was neat seeing how carefully you captured and held the hen.

    I received my book on April 9, 2021, and inside the back page it is printed “Made in the USA Coppell, TX 04 April 2021”. This book was printed and bound 5 days before I received it from Amazon! Wow!!

    Thanks again Kenton (and Rebecca). I’d like to meet you guys some day.

    PS: Let’s go camping!

    1. Doug, I too am glad that eventually I gained the wisdom to listen to Rebecca more!! =) I’m so glad you enjoyed that book! And that you could relate to it through your own relationship with your wife =)

      How fun that you grew up along the St. Croix! Not sure how old you are or where you lived, but during my teens and early twenties (I’m 49 now) I lived near Lakeland and Stillwater. Were you anywhere close to that in space and time?

      Love,
      Kenton =)

  9. Hello Kenton! I commented on your YouTube video(YouTube username Griff) That I was going to buy your published books Chasing Turkeys and Becoming Dungeon Master. I just finished Chasing Turkeys and am inspired. Your intonation with nature is something I aspire to hone. I’ve had moments of incredible presentness and practice mindfulness, meditation and to the best of my abilities live a disciplined and virtuous life.

    I just wanted to thank you for your many teachings and this incredible story about how no dream is impossible. I was smiling from ear to ear reading the final chapters and seeing this footage of your catch.

    I mountaineer and can relate to your story on so many levels. Our wilderness on this planet has taught me so much about gratitude and the deep powerful presence of life.

    I hope to someday come out to Wisconsin and learn from you at ReWild University.

    Looking forward to reading Becoming Dungeon Master next.

    Many thanks,
    -Griffin

    1. Griffin, I so appreciate your words! If the story could inspire you, then the book has fulfilled its purpose. And I love that we’ve both found so much boon in nature — I always feel like it has the power to bring out the best in us =)

      Much love!
      Kenton =)

  10. Hi Kenton! My son and I happened upon your book this winter. Thank you for sharing your story. We had many moments laughing through the reading of Chasing Turkeys and really appreciated your voice and writing prowess.
